what am i supposed to set the timing light to? i cant find it in the books anywhere. also i got the engine to idle right and smooth but when i rev it and let it go back to idle the rpms drop to 500 and then tries to rev back up but then dies. i checked the idle thing on the throttle body but it was clean inside. so is this just the timing problem?
You should buy the hayes manual if u plan on working on this thing it is a pretty complex vehicle..the Code test is also in Hayes manual 12 bucks at any auto parts store...
I too have a 90 Bronco with a 5.0...and i am having the exact same problem. I thought it was the timing, so i checked and it was a little off and i adjusted it. But it was still doing the same thing! I was thinking that maybe my fuel filter was becoming clogged but alot of guys with similar year broncos have been saying its the throttle position sensor TPS. Please post with your results when your finished......cause i need help too!
well im taking my truck into my shop class so my old teacher can help me out, im also thinking it might just be a vacuum leak but i will try to pull the codes before i start messing with things, thanks for the info and ill write back to give you all a heads up on what happened
TPS could be the problem but a malfunctioning IAC will do the same thing. The symptoms sound like what happens when the IAC is disconnected (electrically). If its not functioning at all it will have the same effect as not being connected. Pulling codes should give you a good indication as to whether its the TPS or the IAC. If it idles fine when you start it and then falls on its face after you touch the pedal or put it in gear, remember EEC-IV engines go through about 30-60 seconds of warm-up unless the truck is put in gear or the driver taps the accelerator.
You can Check your TPS just look for the voltage key on engine off 5v orange - black and <1 volt but not less .5 volts than ( green to black wires)at idle....
you cAn pull throttle by hand and voltage should gradually go to 4.5-5 volts..
when u adjust timing make sure spout is disconnected......
we know all this...
U can adjust timing by ear if u have a sagging chain...even slightly advanced may give u non stalling results....Play with the riming a bit to get the best running results u can get...
i went to firestone and did a diagnostic check. The tps was fine it was a idle sensor that sits under the black cap right above the intake. In order to fix buy a idle sensor it controls the airflow in when idling
i noticed on the directions for the cams i got (comp cams part# 31-255-5) that it said i had to set it 4 deg in advance so does that sound right cause i have mine set at 10deg and it idles at 650, sometimes would die and below 1500 rpms and it is hesitating, could this be the problem? ill try to change it tomorrow if i have time see if it fixes my problem.
