Locking hubs

May be a simple question, but what exactly do the hubs on the front axle of a 4x4 do?

If your talking about the manual locking hubs it engages the tire from free-wheel or 2 wheel drive to the axel so you will be in 4 wheel drive. It just disconnects the tires so they spin freely without turning your front axel. It also saves the life of the axel and gives you better gas mileage when your on-road or in 2 wheel drive.
