Have you changed the air and fuel filters? Also check for vacuum leaks.

air filter is new and i assume that since i have enough fuel pressure to run at highway speed i think it should be ok. is there a way to test for vacuum pressure loss?
thanks again.

Um, the IAC solenoid. I've found carb cleaner is quite effective for this.

Check out the link on the 4.0 IAC in the tech info thread at the top of the forum, Rockledge has a pic of it from his truck.

OK , thanks , is there any chance it could be excessive carbon build up in the intake ?

Carbon build up should not cause poor idle.

Could be the screen on your fuel pump as well...not letting anough gas thru at idle speeds. It could also be your EGR Valve, buddy on mine had same type of prob on a 96 3.0L 4x4 and the EGR valve had actaully broken away from the manifold due to rust.
