...Hi gang, I just purchased a 2004, E-250 cargo van for my electrical business, however, I opted for the 4.6L,8 cyl. engine, and I thought it was gonna be a "Triton",...but upon looking, there's no decal on the front fender reading.."V-8 Triton"... did I get duped, or is it a standard 4.6L engine ?? What is the difference, how can I find out what type of engine it is..?? My other concern is that although the van will be laden with tools, and such, should I have gone for the 5.4L..?? A mechanic warned me against this and said that the 5.4L uses alot more gas...I guess it's alittle late now,but I wonder if I made the right choice...
There is no difference. It is a 4.6L Modular engine. I have seen 97-03 trucks with the Triton V8 emblem with the 4.6L and 5.4L. I guess they don't use the emblems on the 2004's. The only 2004 truck that I paid any attention to had a 5.4 Triton emblem. I don't know about the vans.
Triton is just a catchy name for the Modular 4.6L or 5.4L engines. Kinda like the GM Vortec or Dodge Magnum.

... So it is indeed a "Triton" after all..??..I don't mean to sound foolish, but I'm hung up on "names" I guess...
... The only reason I'm obsessing about this is that in talking with my local mechanic, he told me that 4.6L engines are almost always installed as the engine for the E-150 vans and that my E-250 van should've had a 5.4L..to handle the extra weight....what do you think......
You probably made the wrong choice. The 4.6 is not a good "work" engine in my opinion while the 5.4 is fine and the V10 even better. No one ever wishes they had less power. YOUR ENGINE IS A TRITON.
It all depends how much weight you are hauling. My partners '03 E250 with 4.6 has no problems with a moderate to heavy load.
I have an '03 e350 5.4 , but I am allways heavily loaded.
The 4.6L V-8 is now the standard engine in the E-250 for 2004. The 5.4L is optional. From 1997-2003 the E-250 came standard with the 4.2L V-6 with 4.6L and 5.4L V-8 optional. The V-10 and Diesel were only available on the E-350. I'd say you'll probably be ok power-wise. The 4.6L may have to rev a little more to get the job done, but unless you're loading the van to full capacity I think you'll probably be ok.
