Okay, have a question about the 'gem' module and cruise control. Can't get the cruise to work. Electric shop diagonosed as bad code in the 'gem' module. Apparently the gem doesn't recognize the tire size or axle ratio. When I hit on and then when I hit set, it just blinkds once and won't set. Anyway, anyone know how hard to replace the gem module. Can I do it myself? The part itself is listed as $212 from local ford dealer, and more independantly belive it or not. Dealer says 150 to install, which is about two hours of labor or so. I figure if I know what/where it is, I can at least save some money. But I shy away from anything electronic. It's a 99 regular cab, 3.0 auto 4x4 with 4.10 axle. Thanks.
The GEM is directly behing the radio. Its not diffucult to replace, you just have to take out the radio and take off the plate around the radio. It's a black box about 7 inches long and about 3 inches wide. But there will more than likely be reprogramming needed.
With a flash code of one, it looks like ford is saying check the vehicle speed actuator cable for sticking or broke. If its ok, replace the vehicle speed servo. then go for the GEM,RABS, and 4WABS module. There are a bunch of codes for the PID's. I would look it over for a broken Cable, reseat the connector on the servo, then take it to a dealer.
