I have never experienced a pump go bad or a clog in the oil system. My ranger 2.9 litter, was leaking oil from the rocker covers so I replaced the seals, then went on the highway for 20 min warmup run, at this time engine ran great. Parked to shop for 1 hour, then when I started the engine the oil presure dropped to less than 1/2 normal, and the lifters tapped badly but it continued run but poorly. Is this the habbit of a bad pump or a clog in the oil system. If a clog should I drain the oil and put keosine in the system or something else to soak to remove a clog, or something else? Is ther other options to test for pump failure or clog?
Thaks a lot for the help Jerry ranger9 .
Maybe a piece of old gasket material got lodged in an oil drain hole in the head and is restricting flow back to the pan. Did you check the oil level when that happened? Otherwise some crud could have gotten knocked loose and clogged the oil pump pickup screen.
If it is a clogged screen, there is a simple fix that usually works. Drain the oil and put 1 Gal. mineral spirits in engine. Let is set for about 48 hours and drain it out. Do not!!!!! start the engine with it in. A lot of your old mechanics do it all the time.

I agree. Dont start it with that in. Good trick, havent heard of it before. Might have to try that on my truck.
