My '99 350 PS keeps dieing, there seems to be no rhyme or reason, no predictability. It will run fine for miles, then all of a sudden hick-up, burp, the "service engine soon" light comes on and it dies. usually it restarts, and sputters for a while then runs fine. Occasionally, it dies, restarts and dies over and over again, then runs fine. Occasionally, it dies, won't restart and I let it sit for a while and it restarts, sputters for a while and then runs fine. The "service engine soon" light always goes off at the next restart. I changed the fuel filter, added fuel conditioner, and filled it up with fuel from a different station. I took it to AutoZone and their computer showed no hard code errors.
Classic cam position sensor symptoms. When it dies and will not restart does the tach register RPM while cranking? If not, another symptom of failed cam position sensor. It is located next to the front crankshaft pulley, about 10:00 as you look at the front of the engine. One 10mm bolt holds it in, about a 10 minute repair the first time, 5 min or less after that.
Another problem could be failed injection pressure regulator O rings. Most often IPR O ring failure results in turning the engine off and it will not restart when warmed up. You have to let it cool down before it will start again, starts fine when cold. I have run across a couple who have symptoms similar to yours and it winds up being IPR O rings.
First item, though, wouldbe CPS - check with International, they are about half the cost of Ford.
That was it, I stopped by the International Dealer and picked up a Camshaft Position Sensor for $109. Took about 45 minutes to install and no problems since. Thank you very much.
I had the same problem in my 96 F250 psd. It turned out to be a bad connection in the injection pressure regulator wire harness plug. It would die, then start later. Start it and wiggle the plug. When I did this it would die.
