Ok,I searched for 1987 and 87 but came up with zip.I know that has been asked a jillion times but I can't find it.I just picked up a nice little 87 F150 4x4 with a near new 300 I6.What Autos came in this truck and what Transfer case?I know it says Borg Warner. The truck has a build date of 3/87 if that helps.I got a feeling I might be doing a little work on the tranny and or transfer sooner than I really wanted to.Tranny seems to slip a lot at take off but seems ok after 1st gear.Maybe a little slippage but since I have no tach installed yet I ain't real sure.Maybe just the TC.As for the Transfer It is a real PITA to move it from 2H to 4H to N but can't get it to go into 4L to save my life.Maybe I ain't doing it right. Is there a trick to it?This is my first 4x4.Thanks in advance.
Oh,Duhhhhh,In all my excitment of finally getting a 4x4 I forgot to even look at the door tag.Trans Code K which I think is a C6.Can one of these thing be rebuild by a back yard mechanic unlike the darned E4OD POS in my 7.3L IDI?I enjoy doing ALL my own work if it is possible. Also, what axle do I have. The code is 19.I figure it is the good ol run of the mill 8.8 but does the code on the door tag also tell what gears it has?One last question for this round. When I put it in Reverse it makes a loud bang/clunk.I was under there today and tried to move the drive shaft and it didn't have any play in it.
Axle code 19 is a 3.55 Limited Slip. [on edit: depending on which decoder I used on this website, it could be either limited slip or open, the 2 decoders do not agree on what a code 19 is as far as differential, but do agree on the ratio, sorry for the confusion]. Transmission code K is not listed as far as I have looked. If it's a 3spd auto no OD, it's probably a C6. A B-W t-case in a half-ton should be a model 13-45. On my 13-56 I have to push the lever down while pulling back on it to go into either Nuetral or 4Low (can't remember which off-hand).

thanks guys,I am leaning towards a C6 myself.I think it is a non OD 3 spd.Haven't been able to count the shifts due to fighting with the wheel to keep it going in a straight line......steering is kinda loose(300K what else do ya expect)!ok,on the rear end,the open will spin one side while the other just sits there looking at you while the LS will spin both sides right?I will have to test it next time it rains.
If you don't want to wait for the rain (that can take a few weeks around here), you can jack up both sides of the rear end and put the trans in Nuetral and spin one tire forward. If the other tire spins in reverse, its an open diff. If the other tire spins forward, it has a limited slip. If you only want to jack up one side and leave the other side on the ground, put the trans in Nuetral and try to spin the one tire. If you can spin it, it's an open diff. If you can turn it but it takes ALOT of effort, it's a limited slip.
