Rear End ID!
Can someone please tell me what rear end I have. I have a 1977 Ford F100. the axle code is 47. I have not been able to find this code in any reference.

I checked the decoder on this website, nope, 47 not listed. I ran the VIN, all it came up with was '77 F100 2wd with 300 6cyl and single barrrel carb built in San Jose factory. I would think the axle should be a Ford 9". If it has a removeable third member (removes from the front) and no rear bolt-on sheetmetal cover on the diff housing, it's likely a 9". The ratio could be anything from 2.75-3.50.

I checked the rear end and it does not have a 9 inch (i wish it did). I have looked up about twenty different sources on this and by process of elimination I have determined that it must be a Dana 44. The ratio is 3.07. The bolt pattern on the housing and the measurements seem to fit. It says that this rearend came in bronco's and 4 wheel drives, but mine is not. My next question is: Why is the code not listed anywhere but on my door?

Jessfactor, go the 'tech articles' section of this website (upper right corner of this page there is a link to it) and go to the decoders section and there you will find 2 different VIN decoders, and an axle decoder.
Cardinal, not sure on why the code isnt listed. The Dana axles usually have the model # (44) cast into the housing on the corner next to the cover.
