in the raditor i think it poured all the water into the piston
cylinder i think it has a crack head or blown head gasket i'm i
right has anybody else had this problem if so what did you do
or how did you fix it please help!!! JED
My bro-in-law had an 86. It had a cracked head AND a blown head gasket. Both of these seem to be common problems on the 6.9. Cracked heads are NOT repairable. We had to locate a new set.
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 12-Mar-02 AT 10:31 AM (EST)]His '89 would be a 7.3 and, yep, it's time for a top end job. You can get warranted heads for $635, freight prepaid ($150 core charge) at DIS. The good thing about the old IDI engines is this job is fairly manageable for someone with decent mechanical skills. All you need is a good shop, a good helper, good tools, and a patient spouse. Adult beverages and anger management classes wouldn't hurt.
becareful if you were not overheating.you may have other concerns.these engines have one minor minor problem.if the truck has high miles and the cooling system has been neglected electrolysis can eat holes in the cylinders from the backside of the the cooling jacket.
diesel fans ... the ih 7.3 diesel has an oil cooler that may be causing the problem with the oil in the radiator. If the head gaskets are out of it, the radiator will just empty out and not show oil there. The pistons making compression will pressurize the cooling system and push the water out. 7.3 oil coolers are pretty reliable. Once they are assembled and installed correctly they hardly ever fail internally except to clog up from neglected coolant. Since the IDI 6.9s and 7.3s have a history of head gasket problems, that's where I'd bet my money.
