I am on one of my many pilgramages to Scottsdale Arizona for hiring/firing/come to Jesus meetings...whatever you want to call them. I haven't really noticed this particular thing about my truck before..
I live and drive at an altitude of approx. 8500-10,000 feet in Colorado. Scottsdale Arizona is significantly lower in altitude...but not attitude.
I bought the truck here in Scottsdale.....I am assuming it is setup for low altitude? Man it is so much more powerful here in Scottsdale...in Colorado I cannot even come close to lighting the wheels at a stop sign..but here I can make them chirp.
Should I chip it so I can have some of that power in Colorado? I am assuming the altitude causes the same sort of problem I have with my Quads....no air. But I assumed a new truck would adjust itself for the conditions. I guess it doesn't?
Help me to have more power...I drive 90% at my home in Colorado and 10% of the time in Scottsdale.
I believe the reason you are seeing a performance increase due to the increase oxygen in the air at the lower temperatures. The higher oxygen will allow the fuel to burn better. You many need to see about a new filter system to let more air into your system? If you get a chip you may want to get special programs for your situation but be able to switch programs on the fly for when you travel to lower altitudes. Talk to the more experienced guys on this board though.
We took a trip to Colorado last summer from Kansas pulling a medium size trailer, once we started gaining altitude the truck really started to lose power. I know that you can get a chip that will recalibrate for higher altitude and adjust for the thinner air. I would do some checking around or call some of the places that do chips and see what they can do for you.
Can't a dealer flash your computer to adjust to the higher altitudes? Personally I would be leary of chipping something under warranty, especially the 6.0 that hasn't had the bugs worked out or truely proven it's longevity.
Chipping the computer might not be the best thing for it because chips are callibrated for lower altitudes and since it messes with your fuel/air rate. I like hillbilly's idea, see what the dealer says.
