On Ebay I purchased a 460 power steering pump with part numbers D5AW-AA. In the parts interchange and ID book, it states D is 70s era, 5 is the year in the 70s, A is Ford, and W stands for Cougar. What gives-does anyone know?
1st. take a look at the pump, now do the pumps look the same ? pressure hose fit ? return line tube the same ? and the mounting the same ? if so ? go for it , if the return line is different , use your old pump housing , make sure the pulley is the same size too.
the pumps look totally different, the one that is on my truck is the rounded kind with the dipstick coming out of the top.the one off of ebay looks like it is really off of a newer vehicle with a formed resevoir and it is considerably smaller.pulleys are the same size but the brackets are really diff.
It is a good possibility you have a saginaw power steering pump. I pulled an engine out of a 91 e-250 Van with a 460 and it had a saginaw or GM style pump which works fine. Some of the big block passenger cars of the 70's had the same style pump. Hope this helps some.
By the way, these saginaw pumps seem to work better and hold up under heavy duty use than the late design style Ford pump. The old style round can Ford power steering
pump were almost bulletproof, lasted quite well. I installed the 460 engine, transmission and all the accesories into a 1983 F-150 4wd pickup, and all the power steering lines interfaced with no problem.
