It takes some block mods to convert to solid lifters. Unless yu use the "shell" type. The only reason to go with solids is if you are running a lot of lift, above .625 or lots of rpm. look in the FAQ at the top of the main FE page. There is a short Q and A on the subject.
The block mods are very simple..The advantages of a solid cam are 1...will idle smoother with the same lift and duration. 2...will make more HP and Torque with the same lift and duration...3....Eliminates any chance of lifter pumpup at high Rpm...
Disadvantages...they make noise, and the need periodic adjusting..I just replaced a crane 343941 with a small solid cam...The midrange is very close, but the solid is still pulling at 6000 rpm...the crane hydraulic ran out of gas at 5400
