I have a 99 expy 4x4, 5.4 whose right (passanger side) rear axle seal was replaced. Since then, the rear now squeals when I apply the brakes. The pads have about half the meat left on them. So...what should I do?
Option 1.
Replace pads, and clean the rotor with brake fulid cleaner. That should clean all contaminates (sp) off the rotor and with clean pads, no squeal?
Option 2.
Clean pads, (with what) and clean rotor as above?
Anyway, the outfit that replaced my axle cleaned up the axle, but not the backing plate very well, ( In the shops defense, it was a mess) what cleaner can I use on the backing plate to clean off all the grease without screwing up any thing electrical or rubber on the brakes or calaper?
Brake parts cleaner will work fine on the metal parts. If the pads got contaminated (soaked) I would replace them and if the rotors are glazed resurface.
You might be better off doing it once by doing it all at once. Having been through a similar problem with my fronts, the only solution was new pads and rotors (rotors are very cheap that's why I didn't have the originals turned).
My fronts (American made...don't get the cheaper Asian crap) were less than $50 each from O'Reilly. Also, if you do get your pads from the part store, buy the most expensive they have (they'll only be ~$20 more per full set).

I did both front and rear brakes a while back due to warped rotors. I got the front rotors off, but not the back rotors. Just an FYI, they can be severely rusted in place. Luckily, my fronts were the ones warped. I just replaced the pads on the rear.
Next time I need service on the rear brakes, I will take it to some place like PEP Boys and let them deal with the rusted in place rotors.
Edit:
Buzzard gives good advice- dont buy the cheapo rotors. If you go to Oreilly get the better Wagner Rotors and Wagner Thermo-Quiet brake pads. I have used these on other cars, and they cure squeeks.

You know after several hours of trying to SLAM THE SNAT out of my front rotors on my 2000 Expy, I turned to the forum here. And I have to say, What awesome advice. I spent 4-5 hours trying heat, PB, and brute force. Nothing. Then I went here and followed the advice. If you arent going to turn or re-use the old rotors, go to walmart, buy a 4 1/2 angle grinder for about 30 bucks and a metal cutting wheel. That's what I did.In about 10 minutes I cut a chunk out of one of the sides , hit it 3 times and the rotor popped tight off. I was thinking maybe the rust had swelled the rotor and when I cut a piece out of it that is what relieved the tension. But Man what a relief.
Thanks to all who spend the time and leave little tid bits here.
