poping through carb

poping through carb

got my 429 runing timing is at 12 - 28 to 30 totle idles good but it pops through carb from 2800 on . new cap rotor wires plugs coil but stock 81 f 250 ignition and dis any ideas what might be causing this

Sounds like total timing is to slow. Should be 36-38. Hold the rpms about 3,000-4,000rpm and advance the timing until you hear the motor slow down then retard it to were it picks back up. That should get you real close. Then drive it and and if it pings slow it down a little more. I have learned not to trust stock balancers for timing plus every motor is a little different.

found the problem

tore motor down tonight and found one lobe rounded off what would cause this in a fresh motor? geus i will order a new cam and lifters tomorow and try again , what do you sugest for a cam i might want one a little more raticle anyway, i think thier is more power to be got than thier was with cam i ruined. heres my motor again 71 429 ,doves ported polished, stealth 10.5 flat tops , 825 race demon, 150 shot of juise , 2 in open headers

Call some of the smaller cam companies and tell them what you want it to do and they will set you up. I don't buy shelf grinds anymore as the are too general. A custom cam doesn't usually cost anymore and they are made for your motor and what you want it to do. I have had good luck with Erson cams and just ordered one from Cam Research yesterday. Both of these companies people will talk to you in length and not rush you off the phone like the big tech lines.
