Can someone give me instructions or point me to an area
on how to change my fuel filter on my 97 PSD.
I am a true shade tree mechanic so working on it isnt the problem, just
that i'm not familiar with Diesels yet
Also what type of fuel filter should i use...I've seen posts on all kinds, including cheap ones on ebay?

Don't know about aftermarket fuel filters, I use Motorcraft. Instructions in box. Flip yellow lever, to drain water, unscrew filter cap, (top middle of engine area) remove discard reinstall with top seal bevel up, flip yellow lever to close drain, cycle key to fill, enjoy.
Once you have done this once it won't take more than 5 minutes to do. Here's what you do:
1. Open lid/remove plastic cover over fuel bowl (depending on year).
2. Open drain valve (to the left side at the bottom of the bowl) by pushing it to the left (back of the truck). You may want to attach a piece of 5/16" hose to the bottom of the drain so you can avoid a mess.
3. Unscrew the fuel bowl lid. You may need to use tools to loosen the lid, but I can usually get mine by hand. If I need to I can hook up my 1/2" socket wrench to the lid.
4. Remove the old fuel filter and o-ring (from the lid).
5. Close the drain valve on the fuel bowl.
6. This is optional. Fill the fuel bowl about 1/2 way with Standyne Lubricity Formula or a similar product.
7. Install the new o-ring on the lid making sure to follow the instructions for the beveled edge. Lightly coat the new o-ring with fresh diesel fuel.
8. Attach the new fuel filter to the lid.
9. Install the new filter/lid and make sure it is on straight and tight.
10. Turn the key and wait for at least 10 seconds, especially if you didn't add any additive to the fuel bowl. This will allow the fuel bowl to fill before you start the engine.
You can use filters that come attached to the lid, but don't throw your lid away. You may need it if you go back to the other style filter.
BTW, use Racor filters. Same as Motorcraft without the extra cost.
It dosen't come off. It's an aftermarket filter that is attached and dosen't come off
from the lid. You've to either:
A. get another aftermarket filter that comes with the lid
B. go to the dealer and get the filter and a replacement cap
Unless you have the old cap, then all you need is the filter.
Ran into this myself, I would get the Ford cap speaking from experience. I needed a filter on the road and couldn't find an aftermarket so I had to buy the cap and filter at a dealer, no local shop had an aftermarket filter/cap part or factory cap. If your ever on the road and need a filter and theres no dealer nearby you may have to get the filter/cap set up but you'll always have your factory cap.
I had an aftermarket all-in-one-piece of crud on mine.
Bought a new OEM cap from International for $12 (the Fjord stealership wanted $52)...and found Racor fuel filters locally at $22/each. Each new filter comes with the gasket. Replace the gasket EACH time your change the filter.
I would suggest you hook a piece of hose to the drain. I didn't. Fuel everywhere. You can also get the filters directly from international. $21 here in Utah. Looks like there is a dealer there in Langhorn.

if i use the international dealer here in Langhorne, Pa,
Which i know exactly were it is, What do i tell them i'm looking for??
I'm assuming they will not want to here about a FORD in there shop
Or is the 7.3 used elsewhere besides ford?
I would recommend checking with oil guard on the filters they sell Racors in packs of three for $16.00 a piece. However, I'm not sure for your year if it is any different.
I had an aftermarket all-in-one-piece of crud on mine.

Do you happen to have the part number for the $12 cap? I just got a '00 F250 w/ PSD and it has an aftermarket fuel filter on it. The local dealer says that the Ford cap is about $70 (plus $45 for the filter).
I'd replace it if I could get it for under $20 (cap alone), if not I guess I'll be using the aftermarket filters that come with caps.
Is there any problem with filtration quality with the one piece cap and filters, the purolators are very easy to find in my area, and yes I would carry the factory cap with me in my tool box just in case.
I don't think there's any problem with them, they just cost more money. If you can't find the regular filters why don't you check some of the websites that sell them? Even with shipping it's usually a lot less.
