My 97 Eddie Bauer Exp 4wd quick working all of a sudden. No leaks, no noise no 4wd. It seems to be electrical, maybe a fuse or relay can anyone help in locating either. I have check the manuals and can not find relay. HELP
I will look for a blown fuse, my 97 seems to have the type of 4wd switching most desired by expedition owners. Thanks for all the great information. I will let you guys know how I did. Ironhorse.
My 97 did something similar. It was about 2 years old, and it was winter in Germany with about 4 inches of snow on the ground.
No matter what position the switch was in, I was in 2 wd. I could hear the transfer case switching, and I would get low when in 4wd low, but the front axle would not spin.
My problem was the front axle solenoid. It is a vaccum operated solenoid which moves a small lever on the front axle, which engages the axle. Mine had frozen from the road grime (salt, oil, etc). I simply worked the solenoid with a screwdriver (not the one with vodka), as my wife moved the switch. Eventually I replaced it. It was $55 or so from the dealer.
Look just to the side of the front differential, under a plastic cover. It is about 5 inches in diameter or so. Have someone move the switch as you watch the solenoid. Watch for about 1/4 to 1/2 inch of movement. Then maybe "help" it to the engaged position with a small tool, and see if you have 4wd.
Of course, none of this matters if you don't hear your transfercase switching when you place the switch in 4wd.
also you might want to check your vac. lines coming up from the fron axle solenoid cause on mine it did the same thing. i could hear the transfer case going into gear and the speed and torgue would change for 4wl but no front wheel drive. i have a 97 and the vac lines come up in the front and then go back behind the battery box and there lied my problem. the blue vac line had been rubbing upagainst the battery box and wore a hole in it. problem fixed and now have 4wd. i put some electrical tape on the yellow one also cause i couls see where it was starting to rub also. so befor you go and buy a new part from ford try tracing the vac lines. on a 1997 they are blue and yellow. good luck with it.
