Question 9" Diff Question

Hi,
I am overhauling the 9" LSD in my '83 Bronco and I would like to know what the clearance should be between the 3/4" cross shafts and their gears. My overhaul manual falls short in this area. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.

I have rebuilt several 9 inch rears with no manual but I have had a few people I could ask questions when and if I got stuck. I have never asked or no one has ever mentioned checking what you have asked and even if you could check there is no way to adjust or change the clearence between the cross shaft and the spider gears. The only thing you can do is check the spder gears for excessive wear and replace them if needed.

Thanks RTM,
I guess as a new shaft is 0.75" the question should be : What is the bore size of a brand new spider gear? The reason I ask is that this diff was supposed to be fully reconditioned when I bought it. It went back to the shop twice and both times they couldn't find the problem ( clunk on standing start. ) They acknowleged however the clunk did exist. This time I stripped it myself and showed them the spider gears and they have agreed to replace faulty parts. This is good as by now it's out of warranty and I suspect they will try to offer me 2nd hand parts. I don't have a problem with that so long as they are in good condition. Hence I would like to know the bore size so I can make an informed decision about suitability of parts.

I don't think the bore will be the first thing to show wear. It should be the gear itself and if the bore did show wear it would be out of round. If I had to guess I would say the bore only has maybe + .001 (.751) for clearence and that may be on the high side. The ones I have built are a real nice slip fit which can only mean .0005 to .001 clearence and no more.
