I just got my '75 about 2 weeks ago with a 360 & When i finally put a new battery on it the solnoid would just click & its a brean new battery. But about a month ago when I was looking at it & cranked & had an old crappy battery on it then. Also, I got one of those high cold cranking amp batts, 850 I beleive.
A couple of folks are saying its the noid & a few others are saying the starter, so could some one help out a bit?
Was it running before the new battery went in? Take your solenoid and the starter to your local parts place, have them test the starter, if it's good, replace the solenoid...
Bypass the 'noid. Take one jumper cable from the battery + to the starter side of the 'noid.
Don't confuse jumper cable with jumper cable..
I think BB was referring to a small , say 18gauge, jumper that you would use in electronics trouble-shooting. I can see how things would get sparky trying to finesse a battery jumper cable onto the solenoid S connection!
Guys, I really meant use a battery jumper cable from the battery + post to the starter side of the solenoid (where the big cable from the starter attaches to). That way you are putting battery voltage directly on the starter and bypassing the solenoid all together.
Good point BB. Brain lapse on my part. Wouldn't do any good to use a small jumper to trigger the solenoid it it's bad....but it can rule out a problem in the switch. From the sounds of it, the solenoid is bad or there is a bad ground.
I've fixed many a bad start by cleaning up grounds and other connections.
Got her running yesterday but theres a small leak in the back of the head or header. I had to beat the starter a bit then try to jump it like yall said. Thanks
