511 assembly status...

Well, She's basically assembled now. Bottom end is buttoned up, balancer is on, heads are on, rocker geometry has been checked, pretty much everything is ready except the manifold. I need to machine a hole where the original fill tube would go, except mine is getting a -12an fitting to hook to the vacuum pump when I get it. I also need to get some intake manifold gaskets that are a little closer to the size of ports I have, so I don't have as much cutting to do.

I pressured up the fuel system tonite. I just tied the two ends of the carb feed lines together (since I'm not ready to fill the carb yet), and let her rip. It took about 1 min of running the pump to get it primed, but then it took off. Considering the number of fittings in my fuel system, I was amazed that there were no leaks. I set the regulator to 6psi, so everything in the fuel system is ready. I also bench tuned the carb with the approximate jets for my altitude.

I should have the manifold on later this week, and the engine in by the weekend. Still on schedule for around the 27th. This is my target date because my Father will be stopping into town for a few days to visit and I wanted to bring Her to life while He is here. We used to do some hi-performance Harleys back when I was younger, so it just wouldn't be right to start it without Him here.

So thats the staus. All is well.

ps - I will put some pics of the buildup in my gallery soon, including a shot of the Romac for you, Sean.

sounds like all is going well, and i agree it would be appropriate if your father was there when you fire her up, to bring back old memories, good luck and lets hope all goes good.

Just currious as to the reasoning behind getting a hole machined for the fill tube? I have been wondering why some were on the manifold and then later removed? What's the significance?

If it were just the fill tube I wouldn't have it machined. I need a place to hook my vacuum pump, and thought the valley pan, under that boss would be a good place with minimal oil being slung around. I also thought about using the fuel pump boss, but I am guessing that has a pretty good supply of oil being slung right at it. The only other place might be the original vent location on the back of the manifold, but I think that is where I'll put the vacuum releif valve. So, I'll just have a 3/4 pipe hole put there, and thread a 3/4 pipe to -12an male flare fitting in the hole and have a nice place to draw from.

OK, I have to show my ignorance here, and assume that VBAC is an acronym for vacuum brakes and accessories, or something like it. I don't have the pump yet. I plan on using a GM electric pump from a late model LS1 Camaro. If that doesn't work, I'll just have to bite the bullet and get a Moroso belt drive model.

Sorry, I was not clear about what I am asking.
What are you using for crankcase evacuation.

Thats what I thought you meant. See above. GM electric, or Moroso belt. I'll pump it to a vented catch can.

Hey Scouder:
I know you have "adapted and overcome" your previous issue of the crank gear but I found something while reviewing the "bible" last night during some down time. The recommendation is to install the crank gear to within 1-inch of it seating. No mention of an adapter or sleeve in there so FWIW.

Happy motoring (can't wait to see that baby fire) --Mike
