Changing Std Transmission Fluid??

Hi All!

On my 66 Merc I can see the drain plug on the bottom...but WHERE is the filling location after draining the pan??

And do I simply use gear oil? Sorry for the newbie questions...just starting to learn!

Love the forum!

The fill plug on most manual transmissions are on the passenger side. Same type/size of plug as drain, but about half way up the side.

Regular 75w-90 or 85w140 gear lube, depending on your climate. Takes about 3 qts(don't remember exactly), but it does not take a full gallon.

One of those nifty lube pumps works great for this. The one that mounts to a gallon jug and you pump the top to transfer. All else fails, the little quart jugs can be "persuaded" to get into the hole. Keep a few rags handy....you will spill some!

A six inch length of clear vinyl tube at the end if the quart bottle nipple will also help persuade some of that fluid in the hole.
