I guess if you want it, but a cell phone with an ear bud and mic will do the job. I would have rather sen a GPS unit available as OEM

Most people don't know that OnStar can be turned on at any time without your knowledge and they can hear conversations in your vehicle! This is a fact. I work for a major defense contractor and hold a secret security clearance. We were sent a security memo last year that said to refrain from discussing classified info. in vehicles equiped with OnStar for this reason.

I think why Ford do'es not have onstar is simple. fords do not have the problems that GM have. Such as pistonslap trany failurs on the freeway ect. I think it is a gimmic to sell cars & trucks. That is why we have cellphones. I suppose it is good for the edlerly for when they have a probem but for a yuppie that is looking for Mc Donalds thats going overboard.

...and if your car was stolen...
The thieves have already figured out to disable the Onstar antenna when stealing a GM product.

My 75 year old mother drives a GM car and her personnel calling system allowed her to contact the police, via 9-1-1, after she witnessed a hit and run...
Of course if she carried a regular cell phone she wouldn't have to be in her car to actually use it.

The airbag deployment notification is about the only useful feature in my opinion.
I agree. Maybe GM should include the air-bag deployment portion of the Onstar service for free.

I get a kick out of the Onstar commercials though. I especially like the ones where the driver gets locked out of the car. They call the Onstar center and get them to unlock the doors. First of all, they couldn't make that call with their Onstall cell phone because IT'S LOCKED INSIDE THE CAR!!! So you need to have a portable cell phone (and it's monthly fee) as well as your Onstar phone. Second, results vary if the car is in a parking ramp, garage, etc., because the satellite signals might be blocked. Third, you have to wait for up to 10 minuted for the signal to arrive. I'll stick to my F150 without Onstar thank you. If I lock my keys inside, I'll use the standard keypad on the door to unlock it. No extra fees, no telephone call, and I won't have to stand around in the rain waiting for them to unlock my doors for me.
