More than likely the system still has air in it. THat produces a gurgling, growling sound. With it running at idle, take the cap off and look in the pump and see what the fluid looks like. If it's foamy and frothy, it's air. Also remember, these late model plastic pumps are known to be somewhat noisy. I forget how you bleed out the air, but someone will surely put thier 2 cents in and say how.
Turn it stop to stop a dozen or so times and the air will usually work it's way out. Have someone do it while you watch for belt slippage to rule that out.
what type of noise is it ? i had a aerostar van from the time it was new it groaned like a old man getting out of bed (just like me lol) thought that i had a bad one two but i heard almost every areostar making the same noise all at low speed or sitting still might just be the nature of the beast
Guess I should clarified my statement. Gee Ooh is right. It may last for years even though it is noisy. They can make a lot of noise when they are just a little bit out of tolerance. Mine barks occasionally but I know a new one might also, a week after I change it. Watch for metallics in the fluid or overheating. PS pumps run pretty warm normally though.
It makes no noise when you dont turn the wheel. As soon as you turn it makes a weird kind of noise. The fluid is not foamy or frothy, but its not clear either
Our '76 Dodge D-600 power steering pump squeals if you try to turn without having the truck moving. Almost if the pump isn't strong enough. We bought some additive that stops noise and leaks. Quieted it right down. Now it doesn't make any sound idleing. It is also using tractor hydralic fluid in it too.
Ford has a fluid additve called a "friction modifier". you can buy it in a small bottle at your local Ford parts counter. It will sometimes quiet the noisy pumps down some. It also gets rid of the chatter or clunking in posi rears. Good stuff. About a ounce will do. Like I said before, these pumps are famous for being noisy. My 89 F-250 has a plastic pump and I've owned it 8 years now with the noise and it still pumps fine, never gets any louder. I just live with it.
I cant say that ive heard many quiet Ford power steering units in my 17 years of life. My dad drives a 93 chevy blazer to work and my mom a 92 Ferd exploder that squeals like a dying mouse and the blazer turns without a single noise and at 130,000 miles whereas the explorer has 69,000.
