Is 28* of initial advance too much for a stock 351m?
I took a reading Saturday after the shop tuned my carburetor and noticed that the initial timing of showing 28 degrees.
If this is too much would I be seeing the effects at highway speeds? Meaning, I have noticed an engine vibration at about 2100-2300 rpms that was not there before the carb and timing tune. It does not go away until I get below that number.
Do you have the vacuum advance pluged off while your checking the timing ? With 28 deg. I'd find it hard to believe it would even turn over when it's hot. With 87 oct. you probably want to be somewhere around 34 or 36 deg.total, initial & cent. added together. I'd use as much initial as possible. Get it warmed up and keep advancing it until it cranks hard. Then back it off slightly, and hook back up your vacuum advance.
Well, I didn't check the timing with the distributor plugged - I'll try that this evening. As far as the harmonic balance is concerning, that was one of the items I had the shop check for me shortly after I purchased the vehicle about a year ago.
Could I be looking at the wrong marks? I have what appears to be two seperate arms that point at the balancer - one with what looks like a screw attached to it and another that just has a flat arm but no sharp tip like the repair manual illustrates.
Anyone have a picture of what I should be looking at for clearification?
