Don't know if this is the right place, but I have an '89 F-150, 50L, EFI, auto. While trying to start engine in the morning or after sitting for a while, like after work, I turn the key, she cranks and then stumbles really bad for a few seconds and either starts or dies. If she doe'nt start I try again and she starts right up. I'm thinking the fuel pressure between the regulator and the fuel rail or injectors is leaking out. There is a fitting on the fuel rail that looks a valve stem on my tire. When you push the core in , is the gas supposed to shoot out, or kind of just spill out. Not real sure how that thing works. Any help out there would be great.
Next time you go to start it, try turning the key on, but not to start, and back off a few times before starting. If it fires right up, then a fuel pressure loss is the problem. That comes from a bad pressure regulator, a leaking injector, or a bad check valve in the fuel pump.
I'v changed out the pressure regulator and the same problem exsists. How can I tell if it's an injector leak? Will gas be leaking out from one of the injectors?
If it's an injector leak, one of the plugs will be heavily sooted. if all the plugs look clean, it's the check valve in the pump. To fix that, you have to replace the whole pump.
4 years ago replaced regulator and all injectors and still had problems with pressure; wound up replacing fuel pump in tank. Recently symptoms like yours and I tested fuel pressure at 35 psi but leaked down soon after turning engine off. One plug was wet and washed clean with fuel; others were a light gray color. I figured stuck open injector. A bottle of STP Injection Cleaner in a full tank of gas and a few spells of coughing and it is fixed. Pressure now holds long after turning off engine and all plugs are looking good and engine running smooth. $2.99 well spent.
