Yesterday, I went to fuel up. When I pulled to the fuel island, I waited in line behind a '92 F-350 cc 7.3, on the other side was probably a '90 or '91 7.3 n/a, and while I was fueling I think it was around an '87 or '88 F-350 that I found out had over 900,000 miles........no rebuilds or nothin'! The owner said he just put fuel and oil in it and drove it. It looked like it had seen better days, but ran perfectly smooth to me. Man, I felt like I had just a pup and had not earned my wings yet. Talk about nostalgia.....The strange thing about it, was they were all FORDS! not a Chevy or Dodge in sight. How cool is that?????
I had a similar experience not long ago. It seems like I never paid much attention to the number of older Fords (especially Diesel CC LB 4x4's like mine), but now it seems like they're coming out of the ground!!
I bought mine with an assumed 161,000 miles (1990 7.3 IDI), but it probably has been around the clock at least twice! At any rate, it seems to run fine, and hardly smokes or leaks any oil (minor moisture on top, front, below intake manifold). The guy in front of me at the pump had an older "Rat Truck", but it purred like a kitten at 392,000 original owner miles. He said the same thing, "Just change oil, add fuel, and drive!"
I think I made a wise decision. Time will tell!! I am a little concerned about the E4OD tranny, but it was just recently rebuilt by Jasper, and has a 3 year/75K Miles warranty. We will see how it all works out.
