I had trouble shipping a car hood with UPS. The charge as if the hood takes up half a container. Being in Hawaii, I have no alternatives. It amount to legal hi-jacking, and that is the reason I don't buy many parts. I can buy a five dollar item and UPS charges thirty to ship it to me. Plus, their two-day shipping takes a week.

I sold my superswamper ssr's a few weeks back and shipped them UPS to Florida from Illinois. Their gonna charge you much more if the tires are over 35" in diameter and or over 12" wide. Those are the dimentions I gave them even though they are actually 12.50's. They don't measure them. Mine were mounted on wheels and weighed about 125lbs. each. So insured it cost about 250.00.
I've found that shipping point to point for things like tires seems to run between 20 and 30% less if you use a trucking company such as RailWays. I sent 4 33x10 Swappers from Iowa to Texas on RailWays point to point and spent a total of 73.50 and the shipping time was only 4 days compared to UPS's 7.
Like wayne j said, use a regular freight company. If you take them to the terminal (like Roadway, Consolidated Freightways, American Freightways, etc)and have your customer pick them up at the terminal they get shipped to, the cost is low. They charge quite a bit if they have to deliver them from the terminals, though.
One thing a lot of people forget is you can ship through greyhound bus, (no, you don't have to go too, heh) and the rates aren't too bad. Something to look into, except Hawaii. I was stationed there for a while and everything there is a pain.
