Got a little problem here, folks. I'm replacing the 3-4 shift solenoid in my A4LD transmission(it's tied to a 88 Bronco II, 2.9). I don't see how to remove the thing. It seems to be held in by some sort of clip, but I can't figure out how to remove it. The transmission is still in the vehicle. I would appreciate any help.
My original problem of the engine dying everytime I put it into gear was not due to the 3-4 shift solenoid(as I was told by 2 mechanics). It was the converter clutch solenoid. As I was installing the shift kit, I did not notice any broken springs or anything else broke. The instructions mentioned replacing the converter clutch solenoid if the engine was chugging when coming to a stop. Well, I could not even get it going, so I almost did not replace it thinking I needed a major rebuild. I did replace it, however, and everything in the tranny (A4LD) is working fine. Bottom line is if the directions that come with a shift kit suggest replacing something, I would do it.
The answer to my question is that you have to remove the valve body in order to replace the solenoids. Had to do it by the seat of my pants, no manual. It was actually quite easy. Anyway, did not want to leave this thread dangling.
