I have a 1996 Bronco with the spare tire rack, and the handle is pretty rusted as are spots where it mounts to the truck. I was thinking of removing the tire rack, sanding it down to the metal, and repainting. I was wondering if people have done this and what the best way of doing this was. I was planning on just using rust-oleum primer and paint. I've heard that having it powder coated after I sand it down is a better idea. Has anyone done this? Is it expensive? Does anyone know a place near Boston that does it? Thanks, Chuck
Did mine maybe 3 weeks ago, along with the wiper arms. I scratched it up with scotch pads and sanded the rusty parts. Then primed and painted it with Rust-oleum. Turned out very nice, just like new.
As far as exterior parts go, I've had very good luck with Mar-Hyde Black Satin. It's made for black exterior trim parts, it seems to be very durable, and it dries semigloss black. In texture and sheen, it is an exact match for the black on the Ford wiper arms. It's not as durable as powdercoat, but it is available in a rattle can. It holds up for several years on the wipers before I recoat them, which is pretty good for any spray paint.
Anyone ever thought about chroming one? -broncobirdy
thats a big hunk o chrome, makes me think of a all chrome hot wheels car, the kind no one buys. whatever floats your boat though. was the herculiner messy or doable at least? -triple b
"All chrome hot wheels car"
Not sure if you are a NASCAR fan but it kinda reminds me of the Waltrip car back in the early 90's. His car was ALL chrome. The tire rack chromed would be sweet, not that much to chrome but could be $$$. The thought of a $1.99 Wal-mart touch up has an appeal...
I was thinking about getting mine chromed this fall. My brother works at a sealcoating place, and they can do just about anything. First I need to find some time to get myself there to see all the finishes and talk about how resistant they are to the weather. The choices I was given was chrome, stainless (comes in colors too), nickel, gold plate, powdercoat, and there is another one that I can't remember the name of. Looks like the coating inside of a washer machine, and comes in many colors.
I'll try to price these within the next couple of months. I can post my findings here, if you guys are interested.
Looks like you've got some good options there Robin, gold plate would be blingin' haha. a gold plated bronco...the whole truck. I'd go with powdercoating or the washerlike coating. -BBB
