What would you guys do first?

Help me spend my money. Would you get the Diablo chip or Ford's AIS air filter (still not sure about this one AFE and Tymar are still in the runnning) first?

I only have enough for one next month. Then maybe the other the month after. I will not be doing any towing until 3 months from now. Just long trips to KC on weekends (about 2.5 hours one way).

I want to do both for fuel economy. Short of flipping a coin I have no idea which I should do (or which I may see the biggest improvement over).

Save your $$$$$

From what I have read here, nothing but short of converting to natural gas, is about the only fuel economy thing that really works.

Buy a Diablo chip. You won't regret it. Makes the truck more fun and even helps slightly on the MPGs.

Yea I think the main reason those with mods don't see the milage gains is we just can't stay off the go pedal!! When you've got all that new power it's awful hard to drive it easy. I've been modded for months and I still turn the chip up to 125 and blow smoke at a stop sign at least once a day! I say go for the intake first!! Really to run a tuner the bare minimum would be a pyrometer, but you should really do an intake and bigger down pipe and exhaust (to help with EGT's) before you get a chip or tuner. To be safe that's the best way!

I agree with CAT man. Do the exhaust, pyro first. Then do the chip. You want it to breath better before you add more fuel.

OK Thanks guys. I always drive like a granny so hope to see the mpg increase. I will get the air filter, exhaust, pyro, then chip.

Gauges definately (at least pyro) before you chip. I would recommend the intake first since the factory air boxes are notorious for not sealing well.

My friend has a 2001 F250 7.3 extended cab 4x2 lariat, and he got it chipped (not shure which one) but it brought his up 3-5mpg! The performance is definatly noticeable, and his truck is all stock. No problems with it ever, except when you take it in for a tune up. Even then its just take out the chip and put it back in later.

From my understanding the diablo just reprograms the chip in the truck. There is no chip that is pulled out or put in. Is this correct?

The diablo is a tuner you are correct, however there are chips that you plug into your main wiring harness under the hood. Easy install less then 5 minutes. Most chips have 1 setting some have adjustable settings. Tuners have multiple settings and does the same thing as the chip but al you do is plug it in and take it out.

imho
The 1st thing is to research all of your options. Talk to the people at Motorhaven to see what is available and what mods to do and when and how chip/tuner can best be utilized. Good luck!
