Well, an externall regulated alternator can't be a 1 wire system.
I havent had any first hand expirience with a 3G w/ a 1 wire reg. I plan too check it out when I start my resto on my bronco.
Here's the deal. I got my 351 out of a van and it had a larger than the stock bronco alternator. It has a positive threaded lug and ground lug and two spade terminals one labeled FLD I forget what the other one is. There is no regulator on the alt. I talked to a guy over at the E-series van forum here at F.T.E. and he says he has the same alt with a regulator mounted by the battery. Stock from the factory. Advance/Discount has a 100 amp alternator for $86.00. The only problem I got is what do those spade terminals go to? I found the schematic in a haynes manual and it shows the two spade terminal wires, but does not show where they are conected, just shows them coming off the alt but thats it. Any links out there with wiring schematics?
You should be able to see an "F" and an "S" marked right by those thwo terminals. Look at your old alternator and you will see the same markings. Just cut off the "ring" terminals from your old wires and crimp on female spade connectors and plug them in. Sorry, I don't remember which color wire is which. When I did this I took care to mark them as I removed them.
I prefer to use the connector I cut off from a junkyard 80's Taurus as it has a nice vibration proof clip. If you use crimp connectors, use a dab of silicone so they can't come loose or end up touching each other.
