Hey all, 2002 Explorer, V6 4.0 4x4....I posted a little while ago about a vibration I've been getting while accelerating, I feel it start usually around 45 and stop around 70 but it's not a constant vibration. While I'm accelerating past lets say 50 I will feel a set of about 3 or 4 vibrations mostly in the gas pedal then it will go away, then as i continue to accelerate lets say past 65 I will feel the set of vibrations again and go away. My tires have been rotated and balanced with no change to the feel of vibration and I had my tranny flushed and Ford said the fluid was still clean. Does anybody know what it could be?
I think there is a TSB about an out of balance drive shaft for the 02 Explorer. Take a look for that and see if that is your problem.... sorry I couldn't be more help, but I have a 99 so I don't have that particular problem.

A WHINE NOISE ON TIP-IN AT SPEEDS OF 45 TO 65 MPH. THIS MAY BE DUE TO DRIVELINE STACK-UP TOLERANCE WITH THE DRIVESHAFT AND rear axle. *TT
That caught my interest because of the speeds and I also get a whining noise that I always thought was normal??? But would this cause a shake in my gas pedal? I have also found two others:

well i talked to the ford service manager today because i was there picking up a part, anyway i told him i was still getting this vibration and he said that i may need to replace the tires, does this sound like it could fix my problem??? If it was a tire wouldn't it happen all the time and constant??? Please some advice before i spend big bucks on 4 new tires, and also what are great brand name tires??? I don't want Goodyear and I don't want Michelin anymore if it comes to be the tires since i only have 23,000 miles on these...once again this is my problem: vibration I've been getting while accelerating, I feel it start usually around 45 and stop around 70 but it's not a constant vibration. While I'm accelerating past lets say 50 I will feel a set of about 3 or 4 vibrations mostly in the gas pedal then it will go away, then as i continue to accelerate lets say past 65 I will feel the set of vibrations again and go away. I have had the transmission flushed and my current tires rotated and balanced.
i have a 02 explorer also. had the same problem found out it was the tires. front was just a bit smaller than the rear and the 4x4 sensor thought the wheels were slipping and kicked into 4x4. im redoing the rear end now. about a week ago there was a loud grinding in the rear. all bearings in the rear end were gone. i've had quite a few problems with it since i got it.
these are mostly rear end problems and ford knows about it, my rear end was replaced 12,000 miles ago by the dealer and now it vibrating again but no whine yet, shakes the whole truck at 70mph, afetr the tire issues on explorers ford had ,I am apalled that they are letting these dangerouse rear end/axle issues go on without any sort of recall, but I guess they wont take care of it unless someone gets KILLED like with the explorer tires!!!
Check the tire diameter. I recent went through the same thing. I thought it was an out of balance tire and had gone back 3 times to balance them. they were ever so slightly out of balance but much less then you should be able to feel. I rarely rotate my tires, and since i thought i had an out of balance tire i had them rotated and balancesd and that only made it worse originally. Now it seems like then have all evened out and the vibration has gone away. I have been driveing on it this way for a month. funny thing is that this is the 2nd set of tires. never rotate the 1st set and never had a problem. My guess is that the front tire is slight larger then the rear and is causing the 4wd to kick in enough for you to feel it. mine was very in consisent with speed but i always noticed it at the same spots on the way to and from work. i was begining to think it was the road but i have been drive it for years.
NOPE.......Trust me, Ford has drive train problems and wont help with it, the dealers all pasify it just like the blown tire issues, they wont be happy until one of these rear ends lock up and kill someone, I had a 98 that had tire issues, and also the blend door problem that was in all these explorers and ford did nothing!!!
This is their blanket answer, followed by an email to go to your local dealer blah blah blah, and then the dealer makes all kind of excuses!!!!
