Keyless entry trouble

I have a 2001 F250 cc,v-10,4x4,lariat. If I drive to town, get out and use the key fob to lock the doors everything works perfect. However if I am in the store for more than 45 minutes the key fob does not work. It will work once the door has been opened and will continue to do so as long as I use it within a 45 minute period. I have gone as far as sitting in the truck for the 45 min turning on the map lights and it still does not work but if I use the dash dimmer switch to turn on the interior lights it will work. I bought the truck used so I called the orignal owner and he said it never worked since the day it was new, he didn't mind but I do. It is almost like the battery is turning off and when the interior lights come on it powers back up. Any help would be greatly appreciated Thanks in advance.

The keyless entry is integrated into the Gem module on that model. If there is a load on the electrical system drawing power, say from a dome lamp staying on, the battery saver will time out and depower the Gem module. When you open the door it resets the battery saver relay, or if you cycle the key. It appears you have either a short creating a drain on the battery, dome lamp staying on, or a bad battery saver relay. I would try replacing the relay if you dont suspect any draws or dome lamp isnt staying on.

HomerWinzlow thanks for the reply. This is probably a dumb question but where is the battery saver relay?? I looked in my owners manual and didn't see anything listed in the fuse panel (under dash or under hood) I called my local Ford place they said there was no such a relay it was most likely a bad gem module at $382 plus labor I would like to try the relay first. Thanks Brian

I had to research this further, and have a revised service manual and indeed the battery saver relay has been removed from the Central Junction Box on the pickup, and was only in the Excursion. Interior lamp relay control for that year for the pickup is indeed in the GEM module. Sorry for that misinformation, as I was reading from the early released EVTM from Ford which has been revised and I found the revised version on the Ford PTS site. I do know there is a Battery Saver relay in the 2002 and up models but it is integrated into the instrument cluster. On those models there has been a problem with the vehicle security module causing similar problems as yours as well as a number of other issues. So it appears you will have to bite the bullet on this one unfortunately. I would however have the dealer install it, for if that isnt the actual problem with yours they can pull it back out, no harm no foul, but if you replace the expensive part and its not the problem then you simply eat it. Not good...

Hope you resolve it soon.. and again my appologies for the misinformation.
