Check the valley pan for pools of diesel fuel. You should not be able to smell diesel fuel unless you have a leak. Normally the valley pan catches it and since it's hard to see the valley pan it very easy to miss some. Also check the filter head, the bottom that screws onto the filter is a common place for leaks.

Lots of times there will be a slight leak at the return line "O" rings. You may not see the leak because the heat from the engine is cooking the oil. Take a dry rag and wipe around all of the connections and use a flashlight to look at the valley pan as mentioned above. Also, you may try to wipe your finger around the lower part of the injection pump, there is a "weap" hole on the lower area just behind the mounting flange. Seals in the pump wear out and this weap hole keeps the fuel oil from entering the engine oil. Diesel that hits hot surfaces really smells bad.

Thanks for the info, did what was suggested and no sign of diesel or leaks anywhere. Is it possible the injector pump is pushing too much and not getting a total burn? As it is really a diesel smell not foul or anything.

I can smell a little diesel around mine but not much, have to really stick my nose under the hood to start to pick it up. I smell a little out the tail pipe, but anything more than that has always been a leak somewhere. I don't know what to tell you at this point. We have covered the standard bases.
