Clutch replacement

Just wondering from anyone out there on about how long a clutch replacement will take on a 98 ranger. Mine's starting to slip. I've never replaced a clutch before, but i'm pretty mechanically inclined, and have access to plenty of tools and a lift. Just wondered how long it's taken others to do it, and what kind of clutch (brand) they used and what was the cost - I off-road at least 1 time a month (i'm sure that's what has killed the original. that and my oversize tires), so I want something that will hold up nicely......Just wanted to get some background before I jump in head first.

When you have everything apart (2-3 hrs.), that's when you should send the flywheel out to be resurfaced.
I believe that the OE is a LUK clutch?
Also replace the slave/release bearing assembly and pilot bearing while you're in there.
You might want to consider changing the diff. for one more suited to taller tires & off-roading stresses.
Just my 2 cents worth.

well i have a beer before i start..... and a beer every hour...... starts strong but gets slow near the end..... no rushing it will take me about 5-6 hours..... but thats usually just hanging out with a few buddies picking at the car to get it done..... not a hoad/long job... just pay attention and torq everything to specs.

5-6 hours is about right, but I'd plan on the day due to the learning curve. As for the cost, I recently bought pilot bearing, throwout bearing, pressure plate, and clutch disc from Ford for $157 + tax (I get a discount from them ). I think a slave cylinder with a decent name brand is around $100. While you have the tranny out, replace the shift rail plugs with steel soft plugs or brass plugs. Do not get new rubber/neoprene ones from Ford.

BTW, the lift will really help, as would a tranny jack.

Thanks for all the help everyone! Sounds like it will be a pretty good undertaking, but I'm sure it will help me learn a lot more about my truck, and be a little fun too. Guess I better get out the manual and read up on all the steps first so I don't get finished and then realize I forgot something halfway through! Thanks again!!

hmm....... order or pulling out..... (just doing this for fun)

-lift truck
-drain fluid
- remove shifter
- unplug speed sensor (other plugs on the trans if any)
- drop drive shaft
- disconnect hydraulic line
- drop crossmember
- drop transmission
- take off pressure plate
- remove flywheel (send to get resurfaced)
- remove pilot bearing

then re-assemble...... think thats it... pretty easy/common sense if someone who know's what tools are is doing it. goodluck
