Highway performance question

I am putting some axles in my '71 Highboy and they have 4.10 gears. Originally, I was thinking of running 3.73s because I am also adding a C6. I have 33" tires and I'm concerned about hiway cruising with the 4.10s. This is not an off road rig, but a tow vehicle and I will be making long distance trips so mileage is important. But I need some low end for going over mountain passes, etc.

I would like to hear from you guys that are running C6s and 4.10 gears with 33" tire and how they perform on the freeway. Now is the time if I need to stick to my original plans and go with 3.73s,
Thanks

Comet....

I had 3.54s originally in the back of my 70-F250/390/C6...... I had an over head camper on it and plus either pulled my boat or I had the race car in tow on the trailer and never ran out of torque going to the drags in the High desert of CAL..

I never ran out of torque taking the boat up to Big Bear lake! about 7000 ft.

I was running 12.00x16.5s on the rear and 10.00x16.5s on the front.2WD..
Those were the BF Goodrich you can see on my truck in my Gallery!-Russ

Comet.
Your previous thread regarding this topic was moved to another forum.

Here it is.
https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/s...d.php?t=230535

The reason?

There are too many threads that are NOT specifically 67-72 truck related, the topic could be related to any vehicle.

Here is what is posted in the 73-79 regarding this topic.

Thanks Russ, good info. Sounds like maybe I should change gears.
Mil1ion, I was wondering what happened, there was no note saying it was moved so I was in the dark. I see by the link that lots of people have read that thread, but only someone in the '67-'72 forum was willing to help me out with this question. Maybe that's why people don't post as much there. Just a thought. Since I only visit the '73-'79 forum rarely (although more lately) I did not see this sticky. I will monitor this in the gears section (hopefully someone will respond).

I would say with those tires 3.73 would be a good gear, but like Russ said he didn't have a problem with 3.54, but your tires are a little taller and you want some grunt when pulling stuff.

I agree Fordbeast. That was my original plan, but wanted to poll you guys and see what I could expect from the 4.10s

Well I am trying to help with your fuel economy, myself I'm a little weird I would 4.56 it but then again I have way too much octane in the blood.

LOL! I hear ya. I have a Jeep for my low gearing needs. I currently have 3.73s both my 71s now and they have plenty of low end grunt for me, but both are manual trannies (T18 & Np435), so I was unsure what to expect with the C6. With the gear multiplication effect of the tranny, I was thinking I should be ok
