I have a 1978 Ford F150 4x4. It has a 1972 429 bored 20 over with less than 3000 miles on a rebuild. I can't find any info for a normal 429 of that year. (not boss, cobra jet etc.) Anyone know the HP rating?

I just bought a 1978 F150 that someone stuffed a 1972 429 into. The motor is has less than 3k on a rebuild and bored 20 over. I can't find any info on it online. Does anyone have a close guess to the horsepower? No fancy cam or anything. Just pretty much stock. (Not a Boss, Cobra Jet, etc) just factory.
The '72 429 was way derated over the '71. It also had the worst 385 heads ever, the notorious D2s. They were low compression heads with no quench, and were extremely prone to detonation even at that low CR.
Look for the head casting number, which you'll find right above the exhaust manifold. Maybe the heads have been changed on your motor. Any number for the first 2 digits is OK unless it's D2. They began at C8 (1968.)
Off the top of my head, it seems like the '72 429 was rated at about 170 HP or so.
According to my Motors Manual the 1972 429 was rated between 208 and 212 HP depending on whether it came from a full size Ford car or Thunderbird. The Thunderbird had the extra 4 HP.
