Need help
I also have a 48 F-3. Someone replaced the glove box door on mine with one from a 49 F-4, so I have no idea what the correct VIN is on mine is either. There's supposed to be a number on the frame somewhere but I haven't found one yet. Good luck on the restoration...glad to see another old truck brought back to life.

I wouldn't have found my serial number on the frame if I hadn't had all the sheetmetal pulled off. It is a faint stamping (mine is near the passenger side motor mount, others have found theirs on the driver's side) and mine contains only the serial number. After using steel wool and solvent, shine a light at an oblique angle to see the stamping. The rest of the vin was given by the model of the truck and engine.
A '48 F3 would be: * 88RY 123456 * for an 8 cylinder and * 87HY 123456 * for a 6 cylinder. First character is year, second and third characters are engine, fourth is model (F3)
Terry, the vin up thru '47 is actually found on the transmission flange, not the engine. '48 - '53 they stopped doing that and went by chassis vin, located on the data plate/firewall, rating plate/glovebox door, and frame rail. And as always, there are exceptions.
