6 to 12 volt?

I have a 1953 ford truck running a 351w, c4 tranny, gm tilt column and original gauges. i cannot get the gauges to work! i have tried voltage reducers with no luck. the gauges used to work when the truck ran a flathead, with 12 system. would a gauge pkg. from a 1954 work? does anyone have a gauge wiring diagram for a 1954? any help you could provide would be awesome!

If your system was 12 volts when you had the flathead in the truck and the gauges worked, then they should work now if they are properly connected. I don't see how a gauge system from a 54 would help you as it would be 6V also. What charging system are you running? Take a look at my gallery and you will find a wiring diagram for a mid-60s Ford starting and charging system with an alternator. It might help...

Thanx GREATNORTHWOODS! Where do I find this wiring diagram? I am new to this page and don't have a clue! The 351 w has different senders for oil.. etc, could this be causing the problems. The 53 gauges had just a wire running thru the back of the volt gauge!? How can you make this work with a 351w? Thanx a buncH!!!!!

The wiring diagram I referred to is in my gallery. Just click on my Username, then on public gallery, and then on Vern's 48 F3 and you will see it at the bottom of the pictures. Yes, the senders on your 351 are not compatible with the old gauges. Where possible you have to use the senders from the flathead to make them work. If that's not possible, you would have to use different gauges. United Speedometer and others can rebuild your original gauges to work with the 351 senders if you want to keep them but it may be expensive. I'm using all aftermarket gauges in my 48. Sorry, I can't be of more help...
