I have been hearing a unusual noise that sounds like it is coming from the engine area. It most aften happens when it cold. It sounds like some type of blowing noise or maybe a suction noise. I feel a slight load on the engine when the noise starts. When I excelerate the noise starts just a few seconds later, and when I let off the gas it stops. It does not do it at idle, only under power. It does seem to stop after the engine get real warm. I dont have a clue. Any input would be appreciated. By the way, its a 99 250 crew 7.3
The fan on your engine has a clutch. The clutch is designed to engage the fan when the temperature coming through the radiator get above a certain temp. Sometimes when driving under a load, you may hear and feel it come on. This is apt to happen anytime the engin generates more heat. (Acceleration, Pulling a load, Hot day etc.)
Your situation... The fluid in the fanclutch is susceptable to cold temp. When you fisrt start your engine, on a cold morning, the fluid in the fan clutch is cold and thick causing the fan to turn for a short period of time until the fluid itself get warmed up. This is normal.
It is probably the exhaust backpressure valve. Let it sit at idle in park with the parking brake on and it will idle up to about 1100 and make the same noise. It looks at air temp and oil temp to determine when to close to allow the motor to warm up faster. It really sucks the power when it closes though as you have seen.
