Hey everyone...looking for some questions and maybe some advice. I have done a search on here and not satisified with any of the answers. I have a 1979 pace pickup that my grandpa bought back in 1980 that is still all original. The only thing that isnt there are the optional door stickers...but no biggy. It has almost always been kept inside, and being in Montana there is no rust to speak of. It was used to do jobs around the farm so there are minor dings, but nothing major...something you would expect from a 1979 pickup. The dilema I am facing is this; it has a 460 and c6, so I want to fix it up and have some fun. I dont know whether to try to restore it or hotrod it the way I want. I have heard they are rare, but I dont know how rare...I have seen quite a few around. Also, the decals, like most of the trucks, have cracked and would need to be replaced...but I have not been able to find replacements...although on guy on here said he was having them made...anyone know how that turned out? What I really want to do is repaint it silver, lower it, and put some 20's on it. I would take off the rollbar, black bumper, rear bumper, black mirrors, etc. I was thinking I could do all this and just save the parts and in case I wanted to restore it someday. Or I was thinking of selling it to someone who wants one of these rare beasts. I have a 78 ford ranger 4x4, so I want a lowered one for the summer. Any suggestions anyone...you can check out the pics I took last weekend in my gallery. It has been sitting for about a year or so, but is still ready to go. The summer is coming soon, so let me know. Also, anyone know of any good kits to lower a pickup of this vintage...I have looked and cant find any good reasonable kits. Thanks to anyone and everyone!
Hans,
I've never seen or heard of one of these. If it's worth anything, then sell it.
If it's not, then butcher it. Did you say, you wanted to put "20s" on it. As in 20 inch rims? Your not going to be able to lower it. You'll have to raise it. These trucks make poor drag racers. They will not hook up. How do you plan to deal with a bigblock up front and nothing in the back. If your going to race leave the bar in it. You'll need a locked rear end and some 33 x 10.5 slicks. I've got some ideas if your serious.
Good Luck,
KingFisher
Well, I dont know if you have ever heard of them dfisher1, but there are quite a few indianapolis speedway pace pickups out there. Anyway, yes I meant 20 inch rims, and yes I can still lower it, I have seen it done. I found a guy on here that has 18 and lowered it and he could probably put bigger ones on there. As for drag racing I will not be doing any of that, its just gonna be a summer cruiser. It already has a big block in it and a posi, and it does pretty well, so hooking up is no problem. All I was wondering is if anyone out there knew of any lowering kits or decal kits...just so I could make a decision on which direction I want to go with this project. Thanks for your reply though.
EDIT:
I forgot, dfisher1, I have pics in my gallery of my pickup, you should check them out. I also found this pickup on this site.... https://www.ford-trucks.com/user_gal...4&albumid=2131 ...and is basically how I want mine to sit, but with bigger rims.
What a trip. I have a '79 Pace Truck that my Grandfather bought new in '80. I helped him pick it out and he gave it to me last fall. Luckily, my stripes are still in good shape. However, I did talk to an aquantance that has a sign business who says that it would not be that hard to reproduce the stripes. His is the type of business that makes the vinyl signs on the sides of moving vans and does graphics for the rice burner crowd. While the trucks are rare, it doesn't appear that they are worth a whole bunch more than a non-Indy Truck in the same shape. Maybe a mint very low mileage example would be worth something. I use mine as an occational daily driver and for runs to Home Depot.
How is it that every Indy Truck I've run into has a 460 and I'm stuck with a 302?
IMO, I think you should leave that truck stock just add the Indy lettering on the sides. These are hard trucks to come buy, even clones are not that common.
yup,
rare truck. I've lowered a 77 f150 and I'm sure 20's would fit no problem. I had a hot 460 C6 combo with if I remember right had 225/60X16 I think. A long time ago, but believe me, it hooked up!
But I agree with the guy above me.Leave it alone, but maybe warm up the 460 a bit.
Good luck
Matt
79 Pace trucks are very rare. Please do not ruin this truck by lowering it. It should be restored back to original. If you want to lower something buy a Honda Civic or a Chevy S-10.
