Yes, that is what I would have done. I'd say that you are correct that od was about like being in neutral at that speed. The brakes on a Superduty are pretty strong, but that was more than they could handle. you won't harm the trans by dropping down a gear when it is necessary. Just watch the rpm. I know that teenagers sometines tear up automatics by constant manual downshifting- because its fun! (ask me how I know!!) But you won't overly harm it doing it when you need to- thats why Ford put those extra clicks there!

someone also told me that factory settings on the brakes really favor the fronts. does anyone ever adjust it so it is more even front to back? so that both front and back do a more equal job of the braking. my dad has done some traveling with his 99 and he has the exhaust brake or engine brake and i dont think it has caused any harm to his engine. another thing..... i looked at some of the trucks on the lot in my town and they all have cat's.... what's up with that? i have had two 99's and neither one had a cat conv.

Factory settings will always favor the fronts on any vehicles. I wouldn't alter the setting. The front brakes usually do most of the works.

If you're not worried about engine damage get an exhaust brake. Your engine has forged rods so it should be OK.

Some PSD's came with cats and some didn't. Maybe someone else can tell us the why.
