Does anyone know how many amps the block heater draws?
My nearest outlet is inside my garage but I have a few things on the circuit already like a large freezer, lights and workbench outlets.
Most likely only the freezer would be on late at night when I'm plugged in to block heater, and freezer shouldn't be coming on much when its extremely cold anyway.
Anybody know?
Scott
I thought the diesel manual says 2000 watts for a 2002. Maybe I'm mistaken. I was wondering where to get a timer that would take that kind of a draw...
Scott,
Run a dedicated circuit for that heater. 2000 watts is what it will take at the most. I have two deep chest freezers that were reeking havoc with the block heater. Didn't matter which of the two freezer circuits I used. Nothing like popping the freezer circuit and having to reset it while warming up the cold diesel at 5am.

It is stamped on to the side of the block heater but you may have to remove it to see it (you'll lose your antifreeze if you do). I was thinking it is a 600 watt heater (5 amps). If we still have one laying around, I'll look tonight when I go to work and report back on this forum.
ColtM4, I use a timer that I bought from Wallmart. It's the same type of thing as you would use to set your christmas lights (if you do that type of thing) to come on at a certain time. Being the 'Holiday Season' they should be plentifull in the Christmas decoration part of the store.
I also bought my timer at Wal Mart. It works great. You can plug the block heater in when you get home and wont start heating until you want it to. Where I live the power is getting spendy. On the days I work I have the timer set to go on about 4 hours before I half to leave and the truck is toasty warm when I start it.

I just got my used '99 Ford F250, 7.3 home tonight. I looked behind the bumper for the block heater plug and could not locate it. Am I looking in the right spot? An owners manual did not come with the truck.
There was one year where the block heater was a dealer installed option on some vehicles. Look on the rear oil cooler header just above the oil filter. If there is a block heater it will have a wire attached there. Just follow the wire to the other end. If there is no block heater it will have a big pipe plug in its place about one inch in diameter.
