Shift on the fly?

I was hazed out one day after a long night a week ago, any way I forgot to put the clutch in when I shifted and she popped into the next gear anyways...I just shifted on the fly... I continued to go through the gears and it worked for 3rd and 4th too, 3rd is kinda shiesty but it'll go.

This is my question... IS this bad for the trans? What about the kkkkkkk noise it makes when I shift at the wrong rpm? From what I know a tranny need to be designed to do this properly? or can any trans do it?

any trans will do it if the gears mesh just right they will drop in to gear you can also downshift in the same manner but it is much more difficult. and the noise you are talking about is very bad on the gears if you aernt very familiar with driving a stick i dont recomend shifting without the clutch until you know exactly where your truck shifts normally

Good old syncro-mesh transmissions

in 10 wheelers we don't use the clutch after it first gets rolling

Thanks for the replys, think I'm gona hook up the tach before I try any more 3rd gear shifts, 3rd seems pretty picky! I like the smooth acceleration shifting on the fly provides.

If you do it smoothly and time it right, it does not hurt things. The tranny is synchronized and is actually doing it everytime you shift anyway, but when you push the clutch it lets the gears match speed quicker. Since you are NOT pushing the clutch, you need to match the speed closer to make the shift easier--and not put accelerated wear on the brass blocker rings that "synchronize" the gears for a quiet shift.

Big trucks are NON-synchronized and you shift them without the clutch also, but you MUST match the speed exact. NO room for play at all. Been there....done that.
