Purchased my F350 about March 1. Dealer had just bgotten it in the day before. Since the motor has been pulled, I don't have the exact build date. In retrospect, it is a dually and it didn't pull as strong as my 03 F250 with a 3.73 rear end and 35" tires. The problem that caused the cylinder scoring I think was there from day one.
Let's see where to start- 11 miles water leak- 3 trips to the shop finally replaced the thermostat housing- about 3500 miles oil leak in the transmission- faulty seal- and now 8500 miles it has a surge in 3rd gear and also when your pulling a trailer and making a corner it feels like the front end is engaged in 4-wheel drive and jerks around the corner- the build date was 12-22-03 ( or at least that's the date on the window sticker) I figure it was one of those hurry up and get it done before x-mas deals and we're paying for it now
Build date is 2-04, not sure of engine since it's at the shop after I just picked it up yesterday. Ran great first day, second day major lack of power, died after I limped into driveway, and was very hard to re-start. Only 90 miles.

And if the above isn't enough to convince you that the 04's still have a lot of problems, consider the fact that Ford has turned off pilot injection on all 6.0's. That sure tells me that this motor is not sorted out yet.
My '04 X 6.0PSD has 2000 miles, and a VIN sticker build date of 01/04, but I do NOT have the engine build date... from the motor.
It has been flawless except for one slight problem: fit and finish were too tight on the back hatch, _plus_ the little rubber bumpers were falling off, causing the clearcoat [and eventually what would be the paint] on the top surface of the lower doors to be scored. Factory sent new heftier rubber bumpers; body shop to repaint doors "real soon now".
5000 Miles and no problems. It is (was) loud (first diesel), so I installed a hood insulation blanket and excursion sound panels under the dash. These cut the noise greatly. I am getting 17-18 mpg mixed driving, 70% country highways and 40% city. Just had oil changed at dealer with 15w40 - no romps. I crawled under it and over it yesterday and saw no leaks. I did see the notorious bell housing stain, but it was dry, not wet. I traded up from a 1998 F-150 Lariat that I purchased new (only grip was slippery leather, I prefer cloth). So far I am very pleased with this truck, including the rough edges. I overlooked the new F-150 because it was was too refined and not rugged enough.

my husband got to deal with the Ford Techs by himself this morning and as I figured they told him the surging is normal cause the 6.0 doesn't handle well at low RPM's so to keep it wrapped up to 1800- Had I'd been there they'd been a fixing something ( like the Tech's broken bones) He doesn't have to worry about me stealing his truck- I'm ahappy camper in my Dodge
04/04, F250, 4X4, lariet, LB, everything but Moon Roof. At about 6000 miles Truck started romping almost all the time, white smoke at start-up and very sluggest when cold, even warm. called Ford and they have the Flash that would fix it, I was trying not to have it flashed, but the romping was getting to the point that when you came to a stop all it did was romp, mileage at that time was 14.3, empty and towing 8400 lb. 5th wheel 10 mpg, had flashed done at 7400 miles, no more romping and no more polit injection, but it does quite down alot at signals or when Idealing, white smoke gone at start-up, and runs alot better when Cold or warm. Mileage dropped to 13 mpg empty and 9.2 when towing 5th. wheel. I will be leaving for the west coast at the end of the month towing the 5th wheel, so hopefully the new flash has the improvments for high altitude.
I did however purchase a predator for the truck, at 65HP setting it has a 8000 lb.limit, but I pulled the 5th wheel at that setting. I took a 200 mile trip up and down a few hill while towing. I received 12.2 mpg a very big improvement and did another 189. miles empty and received 16.4, overhead computer said 17.7
Other then poor Fuel mileage, befor predator, I am very happy with This Truck. But thats not what I tell ford.

Very early 04/04, running great, 17 mpg without the predator, have got over 19 with it in 65 hp mode. Couple of minor problems, NBD. Only complaint is the UN-limited slip rear end, still working with the dealer to resove that. I won't be happy til that is fixed, but overall, it's been pretty good!

Hey Rob, do you have gauges in that truck? If so what kind of EGT's were you seeing in 65HP mode pulling the 5th wheel? How much does your 5th weigh? Thanks..
