Probaly a stupid question....but how can you tell a IDI engine from a DI by just looking under the hood. Or if someone has a used engine for sale " out of the truck" that they claim is a IDI or DI.
Any help would be great
Thanks Mike
As far as I know, the idi engines had the glowplugs outside the valve covers and you could see the wiring to the glowplugs. I dont have an engine but I do have an 88, F250 7.3 litre for sale.
When you say the IDI has the glow plugs "outside the VC" Meaning to change them on a DI you would have to actually remove the valve covers? Excuse the ignorance but I've never owned or been around any Ford diesels or any diesels for that matter newer than 1980s chev.
The second part of the question I wasn't asking if any one had one for sale just if one was out of the truck how to tell the difference.
If it is painted gray it is an IDI engine (with a fuel injection pump and a throttle lever). If it is painted black it is a Power Stroke (DI) engine (no injection pump, external injectors or glow plugs and no throttle lever).
Forget all that. If it is gray it is an IDI and if it is black it is a DI.
