Does anybody know if superduty hubs are the same as the ones on an excursion? I need to replace mine because they do not engage properly
in auto mode, so i figure i might as well convert them to full manual
like my 78 Bronco.
A tip that me and a techie buddy at the Ford dealership I work at came up with for the auto hubs: once monthly, manually turn the hubs from "auto" to "lock" and back a few times...the hubs tend to be hard to turn with lack of use. Right after you get done doing that, find a dirt parking lot (or a paved parking lot when it's raining) and with the hubs in "auto", put the dash switch in 4HI and make a few wide figure-8s.
A couple months ago, I replaced the auto hubs and vacuum seals in my dad's '00 X, and it was an incredible PITA...in order to replace the seals, you have to take the axle shafts out, which means removing the spindle. I still can't figure out why I was the one doing the job...I'm just a shadetree mechanic, yet my dad got an extended warranty when he got the X almost two years ago. I told him to take it to Ford, but he said he wanted it done right. I don't know if he trusts me that much, or he has NO faith in Ford techies
I got the premiums and the install took maybe 20 minutes. The only issue is that the warns are shorter, so the center cap is about 1/2" taller than the hub. I like PatsPOS way of keeping the auto hubs working...but what a pain. Just install the Warns and be done with it. -And be confident they will work when needed.
I got my set of Warn's at Napa price was $175.00, but they look diferent than the ones on the web site, mine have what looks like a plastic turn unit. These were replaced on the F250 and wow what a difference. Now when the X's hubs go there will be no question what kind to get.
Sorry Ford your hubs suck. At 150K the driver side quit working and the passenger side fell off.
Everything is in there. The only thing special with the hubs is a new lock ring for each side.-But they did come with the hubs. And yes......Ford-what were you smoking when you made the hubs???
