How old is YOUR coil??????

Well, I was so happy last Saturday when I actually got to go play with my hot rod truck, I got it out last night for a dinner run. At least so I thought. It was hard to start, more than usual(it's still kinda cool around here). It would not idle even when it did warm up and it kept stalling. It was darn near impossible to get started again(thanks for that new battery or I'd been in trouble).

I got it home and thought maybe I had a float stuck on one of the carbs again. I had some issues last summer with junk in the tank and so I changed the fuel filter and all seemed to be better.

Well what I though was carb problems turned out to be a faulty COIL . I had pulled the coil wire out and it was soaked with oil . So I dug into the race trailer and pulled my spare Blaster coil out and plug'r in. WOW, could not let off the key quick enough and it idle like old times again . Seems after 20yrs or so even the best original Ford coil will DIE .

All seems well today, I bought some more $2.05/gal Sunoco and drove it to work. Ah, the fun of it all

Well Ol' Blue still has most the original 65 parts on the motor and considering I rescued it from a farm a few yars ago, I'd say the coil is still the original (haven't had a need to check )

I'm running a coil that was on a '62 Galaxie I bought in 1975. They can go bad, but usually don't.

my dad has a 76 f250 with a 390 he bought new and its still running the original everything on it, the motor/drivetrain is now mine sense my dad was going to junk the truck a year or so back. i used the coil off it to get my 75 running that i bought that sat for 5 years and it seemed to work great.

You know I always thought about replacing the coil, I mean it is a valid point, just because it works don't mean it is a 100% anymore, on a driver if it isn't broken why fix it, but if were upgrading everything else and rodding the truck yeah the coil would go even if it did work.

It was one of those...it works, why change it. It was on there since '90 when I first put motor in the truck. I guess all stuff fails sooner or later. If it's electrical= it will break.

Don't leave the key in the "run" position without the engine running. The coil will overheat (if the points happen to be closed) and push oil out the coil tower.

For Duraspark, I never checked, but I would imagine it would supply voltage to the coil constantly with the key on. The coil fires when the voltage is REMOVED from the + connection, so the Duraspark probably keeps voltage to the coil when not running. I think the MSD does NOT supply 12V with the key on and engine not running, but I don't take a chance with that thing firing off while I'm under the hood

Just a thought...

Ya, I never leave key ON for any reason. My radio is hooked direct so no need there. The sad part is this truck has had basically NILL mileage for the last 6-8 yrs. Now that I AM driving it....the coil craps out

I did get a complete tune up kit for it last Fri at Skummit. Cap, points, rotor, condensor. OUCH....ain't cheap no more . I was going to purchase a unilite conversion for it, but figured points would be cheaper. I also bought another spare coil for race trailer.

Ah the cost of toys

the unilite is a little precey at first but it will out last the engine and the dizzy its mounted in as long as you dont leave the key on learned that the hard way, left the key on by accident radio off and well lets just say after about four hours i realized the key was on but the truck didnt fire over anymore. cussed myself all the way to the parts store and back thank god for the extra set of wheels.
