pulled out a chevy

Pulled out my first chevy the other day out of the mud. Problem is i have no tow hooks up front. I wrapped the rope around my front axle, yes very scary and hooked it on his ball on his rear bumper, and yes very scary. i had to jerk him out by going forward and reverse a few times. Tow rope popped off his ball and came flying back and busted up my grill. Yes i was aware this could of happened but did it anyways. little crazy glue i guess. i have tow hooks but never installed them yet. I had another idea instead of tow hooks, i was thinking of having a hitch in the front and the back and getting a big steel ring attatched to each hitch, so it would look like a bull ring or something, what do you guys think.

sounds like a plan, and then you can invest in a winch and switch it to either side of the truck when needed. but for now the tow rope, d ring and a hitch up front sounds like a good idea!

This is what you need: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...spagename=WDVW

Put a receiver on the front and you're set.

ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS throw something over your tow strap or rope (or winch cable for that matter) like a jacket or blanket so that if something snaps or comes loose it will not come flying back and harm someone. Sucks to lose a grill but if someone were standing in the line of fire it would be really bad news. Shackles and hooks have been known to come through people's windshields too. Some time back there was a picture posted of this happening, blood everywhere.

Now that my lecture is done congrats on getting to pull out a Chevy!

I think we need to start a gallery specfically dedicated to dragging Chevy's so we can all get a kick out of it.

look at putting a pintle hitch in that reciever hitch. they open up like a set of jaws and lock down with a towing capacity well over 20k. thats what we use on the farm, cheap, easy and strong.

I just bought a bumper this morning and plan to mount two shackles (or clevis or whatever you want to call them) on the front for pulling people. Notice I didn't say 'to be pulled' because that will never happen.

People often underestimate to forces and danger involved in pulling/towing. Have fun but be careful while you're at it. It only takes one mistake.

Yes pulling can be VERY dangerous. I got my truck stuck once in the tailwaters of a dam...we went and got the ol 4440 john deer and some log chains...well needless to say that there was obviously a weak link(or maybe because i was VERY STUCK!) in the chain. The chain broke and came about mach 1 towards the tractor...luckily it hit the back of the tractor, huge dent in the already very heavy steel. I am afraid to think what would have happened if it had been a pickup instead of the tractor

Poor guy . . . he just wanted to brag about showing up a stuck Chevy and we harp on him for safety. I feel like Sully from Monster's Inc . . . "We scare because we care!" Seriously though, just be careful and stay out of the line of fire. "D" shackles or clevises are the way to go if you're looking for something to mount on your truck so that you can pull people around. They're secure and won't bend or slip off like a hook.

wrapped it around your front axle? i could think of many other better places than that even if i didn't have any tow hooks up front! not to jump your case or anything, but thats so wrong! get those hooks up front.

No thats cool, i dont feel im being harped on by you guys. i realize how stupid it was but damn it felt good to pull up to that chevy and get him out, and texan where would you hook up besides the axle? I have a 3" x 20' tow strap, 20, 000 lbs. closeds ends on either side. NO CLEVIS!!!!!!! And ivan, if a guy had shackles, how do you get a tow strap with a closed end in there? no you need a clevis? or does the shackle open up?
Thanks

d-rings don't open up but shackles do....they have a pin that you unscrew.

I would have wrapped the strap around the front of the frame right behind the bumper and then took one end and slip it through the loop of the other end. then attach the looped end to something on the chevy.

95f150, did you take a look at the ebay link I posted at the beginning? The blue deal is a shackle (or sometimes called a clevis, I think they're one and the same). You just pull the pin and slide the while thing over your strap, then put the pin back in. If you get a set make sure they have a cotter pin or something to hold them in place or you'll loose your main pin while driving around. They'll keep the strap from going anywhere. Hooks will work too but are not the safest contraptions around as they bend, plus you'll find that the strap will keep falling off the hook while you take up the slack, major PITA.

oh okay, i gotcha, i have clevis' at work. i dont have a hitch or a front reciever. thats pretty expensive. i never pulled on the frame because my frame was twisted previously from pulling on one side. i was always told if your going to pull someone to make sure that you use both hooks or it will twist the frame, which had happened. i like the shackle idea, can a guy buy them and mount 2 up front and 2 in the rear easily enough? yes ivan i seen your link there and that would be the way to go if i had a hitch and a reciever.
