Fuel gage/capacity question

I've owned my '88 F-150 w/4.9 6 cyl engine for 2 years. Since I've owned it, 2 things have not worked properly. The fuel gage bounces. It will show full when I fill up, and stay there until I have used approxamately 1/2 tanks, the it starts bouncing. Has anyone had this problem and how do you fix it?
During this time, I've relied on my trip meter to know when to refuel. I have found that at 260 miles, I've used approx 16 gallons of fuel. But sometimes I've gone over and have been able to put 18 gallons in. What is the fuel capacity of the front (primary) fuel tank?
Last, my truck has 2 fuel tanks, but the switch does not switch to the rear tank. If I flip the switch to the rear tank, the truck still runs and draws from the front tank. How would I fix this? Thanks

You need to check the switch, the wiring, and the selector. The switch is on the dash, and the selector is in front of the front fuel tank. Mine are 18 front, and 20 rear. That's an 82. The 93 at work are both 18.

Capacities seem to be all over the place. Empty to auto-pump-shut-off on my '90 F150 302 was 19.6 gal front and 17.6 gal rear. (Yeah, I would always run the tanks dry then switch--the fuel pumps aren't gonna self-destruct in the 1/2-second it takes to realize you need to switch and then switch.) I believe the manual said 22 and 18, respectively. I've got a '93 F250 351 now, and the capacities are similar, but I just don't recall what they are, other than they are around 20 front and 18 rear from empty to auto-shut-off.

front tank on full?

I have a 89 f-150 302 dual tanks, the front tank does this all the time, I was told that the tank has to come out and the sensing unit has to be replaced.

Have fun replacing the whole tank while your at it because if it looks as bad as my 88' then when you go to pull the center 3 inches of metal around its coming with it. Good luck though. lol
